Deep tissue massage includes many techniques that directly affect the underlying muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia.  Stronger pressure may be used in order to reach those underlying tissues but the pressure is just one deep tissue technique.

Deep tissue massage is not appropriate for everyone.  If you need to relax and are just super stressed you need relaxation massage.  If you have particular areas of discomfort, pain,  or muscle dysfunction you need deep tissue massage for those particular areas.  If you are an athlete or you are super physically active and have a lot of muscle soreness all over you may just need deep tissue everywhere.
